Leader Standard Work (LSW)

Leader standard work (LSW) is the written cadence of what supervisors and managers do every day and week to keep standards alive. Typical pieces include reviewing visual boards, responding to andon signals, walking the gemba, coaching teams, and closing open actions. Unlike operator standard work, LSW defines how leaders lead, not the cycle motions of a station.

Plant teams care because leadership time is scarce. When LSW still says "walk all of Hall B" while an operational digital twin already flagged buffer dwell and an empty tugger loop, discovery tours waste the first scan. Lean management systems treat LSW and visual management as a pair: make abnormal states obvious, then send leaders to the right place with the right questions.

Digital management operating systems can couple LSW checklists with live KPIs. The floor still owns confirmation and coaching. Sensors miss context, fear, and informal workarounds. twinzo helps when leaders open the hall view first under production monitoring, then walk for judgment.

Key Components

Cadence by role: Daily, weekly, and shift-handover routines sized to supervisor, area manager, and plant lead.

First screen: Which picture opens before the walk (board, twin, or andon list).

Exception filters: Rules for which dwell, starve, congestion, or safety signals pull attention.

Targeted gemba: Go-see for confirmation and coaching, not open-ended discovery as the default.

Action ownership: Named owner, due time, and close condition so LSW is not a tour log.

Applications in Manufacturing and Logistics

Production supervisors use LSW to review station status, quality stops, and material waits. Logistics leads use it for aisle congestion, milk-run lateness, and unbalanced mover load. Multi-shift plants use LSW to keep the same abnormality response across day and night so problems do not reset at handover. Digital twins change the sequence more than the purpose: scan exceptions first, then walk.

Benefits and Challenges

Benefit: consistent leadership attention, faster abnormality response, and coaching that sticks. Challenge: LSW becomes dashboard policing when leaders only chase red tiles and never coach normal work. Another failure is keeping discovery-tour checklists after continuous visibility already did the broad scan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LSW the same as a Gemba walk checklist? A walk is one element. LSW also covers board reviews, coaching, escalation, and action close.

Should leaders stop walking if the twin is live? No. They walk with sharper questions. Presence still supplies context sensors miss.

What changes first when a twin arrives? Rewrite the first scan: twin exceptions before a full-hall discovery tour. See leader standard work when the map already flagged the aisle.

How detailed should LSW be? Detailed enough that two supervisors on the same role run the same cadence, loose enough that coaching still fits the day's mix.
