Digital model

A digital model is a software copy of a physical object, process, or facility that does not receive automatic updates from the floor. Geometry, layout, or process assumptions live in the file. When the real hall changes, someone must export, scan, or retype. Manufacturing literature often places the digital model at the bottom of an integration ladder that rises through digital shadow (one-way live data) to a bidirectional digital twin.

On site, most halls already own digital models: CAD, BIM, meshed scans, and offline what-if scenes. Those files are useful for fit, training, and capital reviews. They are not synchronized counterparts. Calling every model a twin hides the missing data link and sets wrong expectations for the next budget.

Key Components

Geometry or process structure - Walls, machines, routes, or logic captured in software.

Manual refresh - A person updates the file after a rebuild or study.

No automated physical link - Sensors and plant systems do not push state into the model by themselves.

Applications in Manufacturing and Logistics

Clearance reviews, contractor walkthroughs, and early layout studies run on digital models. A simulation scene that never ingests live positions is still a model in this ladder, even if the vendor calls it a twin.

Benefits and Challenges

The benefit is cheap revision before you buy the equipment. The challenge is sponsorship that treats a static file as proof the plant "has a digital twin" while movers and waits stay invisible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a scan mesh a digital model or a twin? Usually a model until something on the floor updates it automatically.

Can a digital model become a shadow? Yes, when live feeds start updating the same hall without yet writing control back.
