KLT Box

KLT box (from German Kleinladungsträger, small load carrier) is a standardized reusable plastic container widely used in automotive and related discrete manufacturing. VDA recommendations define common footprints and heights so Tier suppliers and OEMs can share containers, lids, and pallet patterns without custom packaging for every part family.

On the floor a KLT is a specific kind of plastic tote: rigid walls, modular sizes, and often a matching lid. It sits between loose parts and a full pallet or metal cage. Operators pick, stack, and tugger-deliver KLTs as named units in supermarket and line-feed flows.

Because KLTs are pool assets that cycle for years, they are classic returnable packaging. Empty KLT shortage stops kits as surely as missing parts. Location and gate reads on KLT IDs therefore show both material readiness and packaging pool health.

Key Components

VDA footprint family: Standard length and width modules that tile on Euro pallets and OEM shelves.

Height variants: Multiple wall heights for different part volumes while keeping the same base outline.

Lid and dunnage: Covers and inserts that protect surfaces and keep parts from mixing in transit.

Identity: Label field, barcode, RFID, or RTLS mount agreed across the supplier network.

Pool rules: Ownership, wash, repair, and empty-return expectations written into logistics contracts.

Applications in Manufacturing and Logistics

Supermarkets stage KLTs for sequenced or kanban line feed. Suppliers fill KLTs at their pack stations and ship them on short JIT loops. Empties nest or stack for return. When a KLT disappears into an informal buffer, search and find looks up that container ID on the twin instead of opening every shelf.

Plants that instrument KLT fleets with RFID gates or medium-precision RTLS see which halls hold empties and which docks are late. That visibility supports internal logistics optimization and reduces radio hunts for “the blue box with the brackets.”

Benefits and Challenges

The benefit is network standardization. One footprint library cuts packaging engineering, trailer waste, and line-side clutter. Durable plastic takes wash and repeated identity labels.

The challenge is pool leakage across many legal entities. KLTs leave with carriers, sit full of scrap, or get swapped into the wrong size family. Mixed non-standard boxes destroy the stacking promise. Tag programs fail when mounts cannot survive wash tunnels.

Related Terms

Plastic tote is the broader category. Foldable crate is used when empty volume must collapse further. Pallet carries stacked KLTs. Cage handles heavier or bulkier loads. JIS and JIT programs often specify KLT families in the packaging handbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does KLT stand for? Kleinladungsträger, German for small load carrier. In English plants still say KLT when the VDA family is in use.

Is every plastic tote a KLT? No. KLT refers to the standardized automotive small-load-carrier family. Other industries use different modular tote standards.

Should we tag KLTs or the parts inside? Tag the KLT when the container loops and the content changes. Link batch or kanban ID in software to that container location.

Live RTLS or gate RFID? Gate or chokepoint RFID often covers empty-pool and dock questions. Live RTLS helps when KLTs hide inside large halls between supermarket and line.
