Plastic Tote

Plastic tote (also called a plastic bin, stacking container, or Euro container in many plants) is a reusable plastic box that carries parts through picking, WIP buffers, and line feed. Standardized lengths and widths let totes stack, nest, or fit pallet footprints without custom dunnage for every SKU.

Totes sit in the middle of the packaging ladder. They are tougher and more reusable than a corrugated carton, lighter and cheaper than a metal cage, and easier to handle by hand than a full pallet load. Automotive and electronics plants often standardize on families such as KLT boxes so suppliers and OEMs share one footprint library.

Because totes loop for years, they are natural returnable packaging hosts for durable IDs. A barcode or RFID on the tote can outlive many product changeovers inside it. Continuous RTLS tags pay when tote hunt volume or miss cost is high enough.

Key Components

Standard footprint: Length, width, and height modules that stack on pallets and shelves without wasted space.

Lid or open top: Protection level for contamination, theft, and stacking.

Handholds and nest or stack geometry: Features that decide empty return volume and ergonomic lifts.

Identity: Moulded-in number, barcode label, RFID inlay, or RTLS tag mount.

Wash and material grade: Plastic type chosen for cleaning, ESD, food contact, or chemical exposure.

Applications in Manufacturing and Logistics

Kitting and supermarket areas fill totes for line-side delivery. Warehouse picking builds totes for packing. Small-parts stores use totes as the bin people actually grab. When a tote leaves its designed bay, search and find looks up the tote ID on the live map rather than walking every rack face.

Supplier loops use standardized plastic totes so empties nest for cheap return freight. Gate or zone reads show whether the tote pool is at the supplier, on the truck, or at the OEM. That picture supports internal logistics optimization without tagging every loose part.

Benefits and Challenges

The benefit is reusable strength at hand-carry scale. Totes wash, stack, and take a durable ID. Standardization cuts packaging engineering per SKU.

The challenge is pool discipline and wrong-size sprawl. Plants accumulate mixed footprints that do not stack. Labels peel in wash. Cheap totes crack and lose mounts. Without return rules, the fleet walks away to other halls and suppliers.

Related Terms

KLT box is the VDA small-load carrier family widely used in automotive. Foldable crate is the collapsible cousin for empty returns. Cage and rack handle heavier loads. Corrugated carton is the one-way alternative. Asset tracking treats the tote as the tracked container.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tote versus bin? Often the same object. Tote usually means a reusable transport box. Bin can also mean a fixed shelf location in WMS talk. Prefer tote when you mean the moving container.

Are Euroboxes the same as KLTs? Related idea, different standard families. Both are modular plastic containers. KLT follows VDA dimensions common in automotive. Confirm the footprint your customers require.

Should every tote get live RTLS? No. Start with high-hunt or high-miss totes. Many plants only need last known position after supermarket or gate events.

When is a tote better than a carton? When trip count, damage, wash needs, or durable identity beat the carton's lower first cost.
