Material Call-Off

Material call-off is the plant signal that a station needs material brought in, or often a pallet or container taken away. Operators also say call-for-parts, call for replenishment, or call for pickup. The signal can be a button, a light-and-ack Andon style panel, a scan, a touchscreen, or an automatic message from MES or e-Kanban. The point is the same: the line states the need without leaving the station to find a driver.

Plant teams care because radio call-offs interrupt both the operator and the mover, and leave no structured trail. A digital call-off creates a visible request with place, material, and priority. Logistics accepts it in a forklift guidance system or twinzo AOS marketplace. That is the online line-to-driver handshake people mean when they say Uber for intralogistics.

Call-off is the demand event. Guidance or AOS is the system that turns many call-offs into claimable transport work. A yard management system is a different layer for trailers and gates, not for hall stillages between buffer and cell.

Key Components

Trigger at the station: Button, scan, screen, Andon call, or system threshold.

Request content: What, where from, where to, how urgent.

Logistics visibility: Open queue that drivers or a dispatcher can see in real time.

Acceptance and close: Someone claims the job, delivers, and the request leaves the open list.

Applications in Manufacturing and Logistics

Production uses call-off to pull kits, empties, and WIP without fixed milk-run timing alone. Warehouses use call-for-pickup when a dock face or pack station is ready. Continuous improvement uses closed call-off history to see response time and which stations starve most often.

Benefits and Challenges

The benefit is faster, quieter replenishment and a record of every ask. The challenge is discipline: if people keep using radio in parallel, the digital queue stays incomplete and drivers ignore it.

Related Terms

e-Kanban is a common digital form of call-off. Andon often carries call-for-parts beside quality and stop signals. Forklift guidance and AOS consume call-offs as transport orders. Kanban is the wider lean method paper cards once carried.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every Andon a material call-off? No. Andon can mean quality, maintenance, or stop. Call-for-parts is the material-specific signal.

Does call-off require RTLS? No. Location helps assign the nearest free mover and store the path. The call itself can start without it.

Is this yard truck calling? No. Gate and trailer calling belong to yard management.

Where does twinzo put this? Inside AOS and material order automation.
