Empty Travel
Empty travel is the share of forklift or tugger movement that carries no productive load. On the floor it looks like searching for the next cage, looping back after a drop, or patrolling while waiting for a radio call. Lean teams treat it as non-value-added motion. The hard part is proving how much of a shift it burns.
A WMS or ERP confirmation shows pickup and drop bookings. It does not measure the meters (feet) between those stamps. Continuous RTLS location on the mover, typically at medium precision around 1–3 m (3–10 ft) for aisle work, is what turns empty travel into a counted path. twinzo stores that path in the spatially oriented dataset under the live hall so empty share, dwell, and later pattern work share one record.
Key Components
Loaded state: Whether the vehicle is carrying a task load or running without one.
Path history: Sequence of positions while the task or shift window is open.
Travel time and distance: Duration and length of empty segments versus loaded segments.
Assignment context: Open jobs and acceptance events that explain why the empty loop started.
Applications in Manufacturing and Logistics
Internal logistics reviews empty travel when fleets feel busy but lines still starve. Continuous improvement uses path overlays and heat maps to cut purposeless patrols. Event-driven ordering on tracked movers reduces empty search by putting the next job in front of the nearest free truck.
Benefits and Challenges
Measured empty travel replaces shift folklore with numbers ops can fund against. The challenge is inferring load state when only the vehicle is tagged. Task acceptance, weight sensors, or material tags close that gap. Coarse wing presence alone is usually too blunt for empty-share work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is empty travel the same as idle time? No. Idle time is standing still. Empty travel is moving without a productive load.
Can SAP transport-order confirmations measure empty travel? Not by themselves. They close bookings. Measured empty share needs a location stream on the mover.
What precision is enough? Medium precision around 1–3 m (3–10 ft) is usually enough for aisle and buffer empty-share reviews.
