e-Kanban

e-Kanban is electronic kanban: the replenishment signal moves in software instead of only on a physical card. An operator scans a QR or RFID tag, empties a smart bin, or the system detects a threshold. Logistics receives a task with material, quantity, and destination. Leaders see status and response time. The method stays pull. The carrier of the signal becomes digital.

Plant teams care because paper kanban loops break when cards are lost, delayed, or ignored under peak load. e-Kanban keeps the same lean idea while feeding a live queue that a forklift guidance system or AOS can turn into claimable driver work. That is one standard name for the online line-to-driver handshake. Related floor language is material call-off or call-for-parts.

e-Kanban is not a full WMS and not a yard management system. It is the signal layer for replenishment inside the plant.

Key Components

Digital loop definition: Which material, bin size, and station belong to each signal.

Trigger: Scan, button, sensor, or MES event.

Task to logistics: Open replenishment or pickup job with priority.

History: Who signaled, who started, when material arrived.

Applications in Manufacturing and Logistics

Lines use e-Kanban for component and empty-return loops. Internal milk-runs often group several e-Kanban signals into one tour. Suppliers may share external e-Kanban for inbound pull, which is a different scope from hall driver dispatch.

Benefits and Challenges

The benefit is faster, auditable pull without lost cards. The challenge is keeping loop master data honest when layout or packaging changes, and stopping parallel radio habits that bypass the digital signal.

Related Terms

Kanban is the parent method. Material call-off is the broader demand event. FGS and AOS execute the resulting moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Must e-Kanban replace every paper card on day one? No. Many plants digitize the noisiest loops first.

Is e-Kanban only for automotive? No. Any discrete or hybrid plant with pull replenishment can use it.

Does twinzo sell e-Kanban as a separate brand? twinzo covers the ordering and acceptance loop as AOS, which can consume e-Kanban-style triggers.

How does this relate to Uber for intralogistics? e-Kanban raises the need. The marketplace layer lets drivers claim the resulting job online.
