Shared aisles turn into daily pinch points
Most plants run material movement and equipment access on the same corridors. A forklift keeps cycling parts to the line while a maintenance cart needs to reach a machine that just threw a fault. The two paths overlap, radios get busy, and someone ends up waiting or backing up. The collision is rarely dramatic, but it adds friction every shift.
The problem is not the carts or the trucks themselves. It is the missing picture of who is already in the aisle and who is about to enter it.
Live positions put both flows on one map
RTLS streams the current location of every tagged forklift and every person or cart carrying a tag into the same 3D view. A supervisor or team lead can open the live map and see that aisle B already holds two forklifts heading north while a maintenance cart sits at the south end. The guesswork of radio checks drops away.
Accuracy depends on the technology chosen for the site. UWB can deliver sub-meter results, while BLE typically works in the 1-3 meter range. Either level is enough to decide whether an aisle is free enough for a cart to move without forcing a forklift to stop.
The same map shows people who are not driving. Maintenance technicians wearing badges appear alongside the vehicles, so the view covers both the carts and the people pushing them.
Historical paths reveal the busy windows
Live data solves the moment. Historical data helps shape the next shift. The platform stores location history so teams can replay earlier periods and generate spaghetti diagrams of forklift routes. Dense corridors and peak traffic times stand out clearly.
Those patterns let a planner decide whether a planned maintenance window should start later, take an alternate route, or wait for a natural lull in material flow. The decision rests on actual movement data rather than assumptions about “quiet” periods that often prove wrong once the shift is running.
Making the call without constant radio traffic
With the live map open, the practical choice becomes straightforward. Check current positions, confirm the aisle will clear in the next few minutes, then release the cart. If traffic is still heavy, hold the next forklift task or send the maintenance team the longer way around. The goal is fewer unplanned meetings in the aisle and less time spent negotiating the same space by voice.
The map does not replace floor judgment. It simply gives the people who already make those calls a shared picture they can trust. Over successive shifts the repeated use of that picture reduces the number of times a cart and a forklift arrive at the same point at the same moment.
In plants where maintenance access and internal logistics already share limited corridors, that single change in visibility is often enough to keep both flows moving without constant interruption.
